The Dallas Mavericks waived center Dwight Powell on Monday, parting ways with the longest-tenured player on the roster.
The move comes two days before Dallas opens its season on the road against the Houston Rockets.
Powell, 35, played 12 seasons with the Mavericks and averaged a career-best 10.6 points in 2018-19, while he pulled down a career-best 5.7 rebounds per game in 2019-20.
“A legacy of unwavering leadership, dedication to our community and giving it your all on the court,” the Mavericks said in a social media post. “Thank you for everything, DP. Forever a Maverick.”
Powell played all but five of his 768 career games with Dallas and averaged 6.5 points with 4.2 rebounds with the Boston Celtics (2014) and Mavericks. He is fifth on the franchise’s all-time games played list.
On Dec. 18, 2014, Powell was traded, along with Rajon Rondo, from the Celtics to the Mavericks in exchange for Jae Crowder, Jameer Nelson, Brandan Wright, a 2015 first-round draft pick, a 2016 second-round draft pick and a $12.9 million trade exception. The picks turned into Guerschon Yabusele and Demetrius Jackson.
Powell signed three separate multiyear contracts during his Dallas tenure and was in camp this season on an Exhibit 10 contract competing for a roster spot.
