Spain to host 2023 Solheim Cup

Spain will host the 2023 Solheim Cup, the Ladies European Tour announced Tuesday.

It marks the first time the international tournament will be played in Spain. The dates haven’t been set, but the location has: the championship course at Finca Cortesin in the Andalucia region in the southern part of the country.

Spain becomes the sixth European country to host the event, following 2019 host Scotland and Wales, Sweden, Ireland and Germany.

“We are delighted to announce Spain as the host nation for the 2023 Solheim Cup when it returns to European soil for the 18th edition of this major international team golf event,” said Alexandra Armas, the CEO of the Ladies European Tour. “Spain is a passionate golfing nation with knowledgeable fans and a history of developing generations of talented golfers.”

The 2021 event is scheduled for Sept. 4-6, 2021, at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. The United States will attempt to recapture the trophy, which went to Team Europe in 2019 when Suzann Pettersen’s clutch putt on No. 18 clinched a 14.5-13.5 victory on the final day of competition at The Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire, Scotland.

The Solheim Cup was first played in Florida in 1990 and named after club manufacturer Karsten Solheim. Two teams of 12 players take part over three days in foursomes, fourballs and singles play.
