Mike Weir grabs first-round lead at Cologuard Classic

Mike Weir shot a 7-under-par 66 to take a one-shot lead Friday over Scott Verplank and a two-stroke lead over Paul Goydos, Jeff Sluman and Kevin Sutherland at the PGA Champions Tour’s Cologuard Classic in Tucson, Ariz.

Steve Stricker, Scott Parel and David Toms are tied for sixth, while Phil Mickelson, Billy Mayfair, Joe Durant, Retief Goosen, and Jerry Kelly are a shot back of them at 70.

Michelson is looking to become the first golfer to win his first three starts at a course.

Defending champion Bernhard Langer shot a 2-under 71 and is in a 14-way tie for 14th place. Langer, 63, has posted 12 top-10 finishes in 16 PGA Tour Champions starts in 2020-21. His win last season marked his 23rd victory since he turned 56.

Weir opened with birdies on his first two holes before parring the next eight. He made his push by carding a birdie on five of his last seven holes.

Baseball Hall of Famer pitcher John Smoltz is tied for 73rd, along with five others, including John Daly, in the 81-player field with a 4-over 77.

Scott McCarron is in last place with a 7-over 80.
