Michigan coaches Harbaugh, Howard accept pay cuts

Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh and men’s basketball coach Juwan Howard accepted 10 percent reductions to their base salaries, the university announced on Monday night.Athletic director Warde Manuel also accepted a similar cut that was proposed to senior-level administrators and head coaches. The reductions were announced after the Michigan’s Board of Regents approved the 2021 fiscal year budget. The vote was 5-2, according to MLive.com.The pay reductions begin on Aug. 1 and run through the end of the fiscal year.Manuel recently told the Board of Regents that the athletic department projects a $26.1 million operating deficit in the upcoming fiscal year. That amount was based on projections of $135.8 million in revenue and $161.9 million in expenses. The deficit issues are largely due to losses sustained because of the coronavirus pandemic.Manuel proposed a budget last Thursday that included $6 million in pay, salary and benefit reductions, according to MLive.
