Louis Oosthuizen admits frustration after close finish at The Open

Louis Oosthuizen on Wednesday admitted to being disappointed after another close finish at a major.

Oosthuizen spoke to reporters ahead of the 3M Open in Blaine, Minn., after uncharacteristically declining to talk to the media following his third-place finish at The Open on Sunday. The South African led after three rounds in Sandwich, Kent, England before a 71 on Sunday allowed Collin Morikawa to step in and capture his second career major.

“You don’t want to always talk about being close again, finishing second, finishing third, so I wasn’t really up for that conversation right there. So it was disappointing,” Oosthuizen, 38, said. “It was just frustrating because I knew my game was definitely there to have a good, solid day. Weather was as good as you can get at The Open, so it was just a bit of frustration and disappointment, really. I was fine on Monday, though.”

Oosthuizen has top-three finishes in three straight major championships but is now 1-for-4 in turning a 54-hole lead or co-lead at a major into a win. It marks his second straight failure in that department, after Spain’s Jon Rahm passed him by on the back nine in the final round of last month’s U.S. Open at Torrey Pines.

His one career major title came at The Open in 2010.

Oosthuizen, who is ranked ninth in the world, also finished tied for second place at the PGA Championship in May after shooting a final-round 73 and falling two strokes shy of Phil Mickelson.
