Eagle powers Stanley to Barracuda Championship lead

Thanks in part to an eagle, Kyle Stanley holds the lead after the first round of the PGA Tour’s Barracuda Championship in Truckee, Calif.

Stanley has a plus-22 score on the event’s Modified Stableford scoring system that awards eight points for a double eagle, five points for an eagle and three points for a birdie. Players lose a point for a bogey and two points for anything higher.

Robert Streb, Austria’s Mattias Schwab and South Africa’s Branden Grace are tied for second with 20 points apiece at Tahoe Mountain Club’s Old Greenwood Golf Course.

Maverick McNealy and Troy Merritt share fifth place at plus-19. Adam Schenk, Peter Uihlein, Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo, Australia’s Cameron Percy and Scotland’s Russell Knox are tied for seventh place at plus-18.

Stanley opened on the back nine with a bogey but immediately recovered with a birdie before recording his eagle on the par-5 12th hole. He added five more birdies and two more bogeys.

Stanley, a 32-year-old Clemson product, is looking for the third PGA Tour win of his career. He captured the 2012 Waste Management Phoenix Open and the 2017 Quicken Loans National.

The Barracuda Championship is an alternate field event that is running concurrently with the World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational in Memphis, Tenn.
