Cink wins Safeway for first title since ’09

With his son Reagan serving as his caddie, Stewart Cink came from two shots back at the start the day to win the Safeway Open in Napa, Calif., on Sunday, winning the first event of the 2020-21 PGA Tour season and posting his first victory in 11 years.

At 47, Cink became the oldest PGA Tour winner since Phil Mickelson at age 48 at Pebble Beach in February of last year.

Cink shot his second straight 7-under 65 to finish at 21-under 267 at Silverado Resort & Spa’s North Course, birdying the par-5 18th to cap an-up-down finish that saw him go birdie-birdie-bogey-birdie. The bogey was the only blemish on a card that contained eight birdies, one bogey and nine pars.

Cink last won at The Open Championship in 2009, beating Tom Watson in a four-hole playoff at Turnberry in Scotland. His previous six career PGA Tour victories came between 1997 and 2009.

Harry Higgs finished second on Sunday, shooting a final-round 68 to end up two strokes behind Cink at 19 under. Seeking his first career win on tour, the 28-year-old Higgs carded on eagle 3 on the 16th to get within range of Cink, but he parred the final two holes — just missing a 10-foot birdie putt on 17.

The day’s big mover was 22-year-old Doc Redman, whose 10-under 62 matched Higgs (Round 2) for the lowest score of the tournament. Redman probably wished he could have added a few more holes, as he closed his round with six consecutive birdies. The 62 moved Redman 40 spots up the leaderboard and landed him in a four-way tie for third place at 18 under.

Chez Reavie (66 on Sunday), Kevin Streelman (67) and Brian Stuard (70) also finished at 18 under.

Stuard was among a trio of golfers who began the day tied for first at 16 under. James Hahn shot a par 72 to finish tied for ninth at 16 under, while Australian Cameron Percy’s final-round 74 knocked him down to 14 under for the tournament. He finished tied for 23rd.

Among the group in between those two at 15 under was American Sahith Theegala, the reigning college golfer of the year. He closed with a 2-under 70 on Sunday.
