Cameron Champ vaults 53 spots in world rankings

Cameron Champ vaulted 53 spots to No. 66 in the Official World Golf Ranking on Monday following his win at the 3M Open.

Champ slid as far down as 123rd earlier this month after four missed cuts and a withdrawal in a five-event stretch. He rebounded with a tie for 11th at the John Deere Classic before claiming his third career victory on Sunday.

After winning tournaments in each of the past two seasons, Champ was having a poor 2021 before arriving at TPC Twin Cities. He had missed more cuts (11) than he’d made (10) entering the event and was on the outside of the FedEx Cup Playoffs looking in.

Champ’s win also vaulted him up the FedEx Cup standings from 142nd place to 49th. He moved up 27 spots to No. 35 in the United States Ryder Cup standings, although it’s likely too little too late with Steve Stricker slated to make his captain’s picks after next month’s Tour Championship.

“I had to figure out how to manage everything and how to manage my own expectations and what I want to do in life,” Champ said. “I was just putting a lot of stress on myself and doing things that I usually wouldn’t do and acting certain ways that I usually wouldn’t act on the course.

“So I just had to take a step back and say, ‘You know what, this has to stop.’ I’ve got to be more true to myself no matter what happens.”

Louis Oosthuizen climbed another spot to No. 8 in the world with his T2 at the 3M Open, his fifth top-three finish of the calendar year without a win. Jhonattan Vegas returned to the top 100 at No. 95 and Charl Schwartzel jumped to No. 74 with their shares of second place.

There was no change in the top 20 of the U.S. Ryder Cup rankings. Collin Morikawa remained in the top spot after No. 2 Dustin Johnson failed to make the cut at TPC Twin Cities.

Gary Woodland, who tied for 11th at the 3M Open, did climb five spots to No. 71 in the world and three spots to 21st in the U.S. Ryder Cup Rankings.
