Razorbacks Defensive Backs Coach/Co-Defensive Coordinator Marcus Woodson has his sights set on becoming a head coach.
During his press conference on Tuesday, Woodson said once current Razorback Miguel Mitchell is done playing football, “Lord willing, he’s going to be my defensive backs coach.”
If Defensive Coordinator Travis Williams were to be offered a head coaching job at the end of the season, depending on the Hogs’ success, Woodson would be able to slide into that position.
Woodson, who is in his third year with the Hogs, has paid his dues in the coaching ranks, having spent time at Division III Millsaps College, as well as at Charleston Southern, Memphis, Fresno State, and Florida State.
During his time with the Seminoles, Woodson helped FSU to a 10-win season in 2022, while the Noles’ defense only gave up 165 yards per game.
Woodson wants the challenge of leading a program. Despite the uncharted waters that college football is currently in, Woodson sees the bigger picture: not only helping players grow, but also seeing his staff succeed.
In an era where winning the press conference is crucial to fans, athletic directors must prioritize long-term success over grabbing headlines. Woodson’s experience and track record say he can be “that” guy. She’s hoping he’ll get his chance, sooner rather than later.
