Wake Forest officially hired alum John Currie on Monday to replace athletic director Ron Wellman, who is retiring at the end of April after 27 years in his current position.Currie, a 1993 graduate of Wake Forest, previously served eight years as the athletic director at Kansas State before taking the same role at Tennessee. But his tenure with the Volunteers lasted less than a year. He took over as athletic director on April 1, 2017, and was fired Dec. 1, 2017, following a disastrous search to replace fired head football coach Butch Jones. Tennessee fans lashed out after Currie extended an offer to then-Ohio State assistant coach Greg Schiano, who reportedly had a tie to the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse case when he was a graduate assistant and young assistant coach at Penn State.A witness in the Sandusky trial said that Schiano witnessed Sandusky’s abuse on at least one occasion. Schiano has denied any knowledge of the abuse. He also reached out to North Carolina State coach Dave Doeren, who didn’t accept the job, and reportedly had reached an agreement with Washington State coach Mike Leach that never turned into an offer.Soon after, Currie was fired. Since leaving the Volunteers he has been teaching a class in sports administration at Columbia University.
