NCAA puts DePaul on probation, suspends coach 3 games

The NCAA put the DePaul on probation for three years — and suspended head coach Dave Leitao for three games — because of conduct surrounding recruiting violations, it announced Tuesday.A former DePaul associate head coach “violated NCAA ethical conduct rules when he knowingly directed the former assistant director of basketball operations to provide impermissible recruiting benefits to a recruit,” according to an NCAA release.A panel of the Division I Committee on Infractions ruled that Leitao “did not promote an atmosphere of compliance because three men’s basketball staff members knew about the arrangement but did not report the violation or question whether it was allowable.”Leitao will have to sit out the first three games of the 2019-20 season. He is 106-116 in seven seasons in two stints with the Blue Demons. He is 48-82 in four years since rejoining the program before the 2015-16 season.
