BYU’s Emery announces retirement

College basketball guard Nick Emery, who accepted $12,000 in impermissible benefits leading to BYU being placed on probation, announced Tuesday that he is retiring from the sport.Emery revealed his decision on his Instagram account.”Basketball has taught me more about life than I could have ever imagined,” Emery wrote. “Playing for a university like BYU and playing with some of the best guys has been an incredible blessing. My time here has been a rocky at times, but the good times definitely outweighed the bad. I’ve learned so many life lessons and this journey has been so rewarding.”Emery averaged 12.6 points and 2.9 rebounds a game, and made 199 3-pointers in 93 games with the school between 2015-19.He sat out the 2017-18 season for what he described as “personal reasons.” Meanwhile, the NCAA Committee on Infractions was investigating BYU and found that boosters provided Emery with $12,000 in vacations, cash, meals, golf and use of vehicles.Last November, the NCAA placed BYU on probation for two years and forced the school to vacate 47 victories from Emery’s first two seasons in the program.Emery was suspended for the first nine games for the 2018-19 season and his production suffered upon his return as he averaged just 6.1 points and shot 39 percent from the field in 23 games.
